The Association of Surgeons of Assam (ASA) was formed in 1990. The Late Dr(Prof.) Guru Prasad Sarma was the Founder President and Dr (Prof.) Gyan Chand Jain was the Founder Secretary of the Association. A few years later, the association got its affiliation from the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) as its Assam State Chapter. The ASI has allotted a single membership from this Chapter to its Governing Council.
Dr Subhash Khanna is the current incumbent in this prestigious position.
Since its inception, the Chapter has been publishing regularly, a quarterly academic journal – the ‘JASA' (the journal of the Association of Surgeons of Assam), Dr H.K Borah – the current Chairman of the Chapter was its founder Editor.
The current full membership of the Association strength is about 300.
The chapter has six sub-chapters – namely Guwahati City, Dibrugarh, Barak Valley, Nagaon, Undivided Sivasagar district and Bongaigaon.
The Chapter has been holding its Annual Conferences every year since 1990, at different places of the State by rotation, one annual conference was held at Itanagar, the capital town of its neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh. The annual Conference of the year 2007 was held at Shillong, the capital city of the State of Meghalaya. The last year's (2008) annual conference was held at the OIL town - Duliajan in upper Assam. The Chapter also holds every year, a mid-term CME at different places of the State by rotation, sometime during the month of May. This year, the Chapter is privileged to be engaged in the preparation for hosting the proposed North East Zonal CME of the ASI in Guwahati during May 30-31, in lieu of its Mid-term CME of the year 2009. This year's annual conference is slated to be held at Hojai in the Nagaon district during October.
Significantly, the surgeons of Assam have had the privilege of hosting an Annual Conference of the ASI in Guwahati, way back in 1978, which was over a decade before the Association of Surgeons of Assam was formed! The Chapter looks forward to inviting another annual conference of its parent body to Assam in the near future. |
